New Mexico Governor Clashes with Police Over Constitutional Rights in Gun Suspension Debate

Bernalillo County Sheriff defies Democratic Governor's order on gun suspension, deeming it unconstitutional. Governor Grisham fires back in a heated CNN interview.

In New Mexico, Bernalillo County Sheriff John Allen announced that his office would not enforce a part of the Democratic governor’s order that temporarily suspends the public’s right to carry open and concealed guns. He deemed the order unconstitutional.

In response, Democratic Governor Michelle Lujan Grisham retorted that it wasn’t the police’s place to decide what’s constitutional.

In an interview with CNN’s Poppy Harlow, Grisham defended her stance, drawing parallels between gun rights and abortion rights. Harlow questioned Grisham’s constitutional grounds, citing the New Mexico constitution’s protection of gun rights. Grisham maintained her belief in the order’s constitutionality.
