McCarthy’s Capitol Hill Office Stormed by Protesters Seeking PEPFAR Reauthorization

Protesters occupied Speaker Kevin McCarthy's office demanding the reauthorization of PEPFAR, a major HIV/AIDS initiative. Funding is at risk over abortion-related concerns.

Leftist protesters were arrested by Capitol Police after they briefly occupied Speaker Kevin McCarthy’s office on Monday.

The seven arrested individuals were demanding the reauthorization of the President’s Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief (PEPFAR).

This program, initiated in 2003 by President George W. Bush, is the world’s largest health initiative for HIV/AIDS research, treatment, and prevention. However, its funding is at risk due to concerns from Republican lawmakers about the potential use of PEPFAR funds for abortions overseas.
